Dear IAnDian,

We have great news for you. You can now receive this IAnD issue via WhatsApp also!

Currently in test-mode, some of you may have already received last week’s issue on WhatsApp. Do let us know your experience and how you’d like us to make it better. For those who’d like to avail of this convenience, do send us a WhatsApp shout on +91 9820461587 and we’ll be happy to loop you in.

The talk of the town - the transformation of the iconic Bombay House – our cover story, I must say how satisfying it is to meet a creative whose work goes beyond the ramified constructs of the accepted. Her vision, her sensitivity and the very nature of her interaction with what we consider as mere brick-and-mortar, makes one want to relook at things with her vision. This is none other than Ar. Brinda Somaya, who has once again brought history to life with her restoration of the 94-year-old colonial structure.

Our other offerings this week fill in a mixed bag, where we bring you ideas for home interiors and décor via a penthouse in Mumbai and a duplex apartment in Bangalore. Speaking of technology, we have something for all Harry Potter fans – the new magic wand – the Kano Coding Kit, a know-how game for all age groups that makes you believe in dreams all over again! And then we have two distinct curvatures – one that shapes the roof of a hospitality jaunt in the forests of China and the other, an experiment with ultra-thin aluminium as an arresting entrance canopy in Texas.

Lots to soak in. Enjoy!

Dear IAnDian,

The word personal evokes a gamut of emotions; the foremost being a sense of ownership. And with this, come the seemingly little-nothings that make the personal special - like none other!

With our creative geniuses designing stunning abodes for the masses day-in and day-out, we were piqued to get some insights into what really makes these architects and designers tick. We thus approached them with a request to visit their own personal spaces and came back totally in awe of the different philosophies that guide them.

Our team visited the personal abodes of designer Parag Ainchwar in Pune, Ar. Puran Kumar in Mumbai, Ar. Harish Lakhani in Hyderabad and Ar. Abin Chaudhuri in Kolkata. From Valencia, Spain, we were invited into the offices of interior and identity designers, Masquespacio and Fran Silvestre Architects.

It is indeed difficult to enumerate our learnings here. Instead, we have wholesomely shared with you all - verbatim from the architects and designers - with each feature. We trust the takeaway will leave enough food-for-thought. As Team IAnD concurs in unison, "You never know what and who inspires whom!"

Enjoy your read. Write to us at editor@indiaartndesign.com

Dear IAnDian,

Breaking away from the norm and thinking out-of-the-box are phrases that seem to constitute the new normal. And the root of this burgeoning phenomenon lies in the unchangeable truth that change is a constant.

Without rubbing it in (there is no need to), we present this week's stories that bring you exceptional design solutions from across the globe - Turkey, Frankfurt, Vadodara, Kolkata...

Speaking of diverse design sensibilities and perspectives, starting tomorrow, we bring you a peep into six selected designer's/architect's personal spaces. A whole lot of question marks popped into our heads as we reviewed these abodes and we are yet to get them all sorted out! Look out for the stories and do please continue to shower all your love on us by posting your thoughts, suggestions, or simply - your comments!

Enjoy your read.

Editorial

Dear IAnDian,

By nature, we are gregarious beings, seeking all the time. Seeking approval... company... emotional crutches... experiences... Our cover story speaks of three different experiences that have been recently unveiled at the upbeat Kamala Mills compound in central Mumbai. The three proximal eateries offer that 'something more' that works towards appeasing the 'seek' in each one of us.

It's interesting how one can imbibe and continue to seek... untiringly. And what's more amazing is that people continue to ideate, to deliver incessantly, anticipating the 'seek'. Which infers that the 'social' in man is an animal with a voracious appetite. A corollary to this would be an ode to those spaces that resuscitate on the spartan ... ascetic almost. The two vibes at either extreme; and there a whole lot... an awesome lot... a whole ocean of preferences, nuances, personas... in between... Therefore, to each his own. And the game continues...

Enjoy the issue.

Where does an idea originate from? The saying 99% perspiration and 1% inspiration is bound to come to mind as you take a look at this week's stories. An entire collection built from naught - or rather reminiscences of an era that spelt regality. Falguni and Shane Peacock's Amour de Junaagarh is a collection of lehengas that generously draw on applique and crystals to redefine the majesty of yesteryear India. To make it a tad more feminine (if you can ever do that!), there is the French influence that accentuates the gossamer delicacy of the apparels. Do check it out.

Moving away to the mountains and drawing strength from the wilderness - in fact, lovingly bringing in indoors is the Fababu House in Valencia, Spain, by Fran Silvestre Architects. A seemingly simple idea of living with nature without compromising on the comforts of a modern lifestyle. Check out our cover story on this beautifully chiselled sculpture-like home. As another quote comes to mind, "Ideas pull the trigger, but instinct loads the gun"!

Enjoy the issue.

Editorial

Dear IAnDian,

Perception is a very powerful social tool. When used incorrectly, it can even cost a life. Amidst the regular fanfare of an earthy home using the ever-inventive and timeless brick as the ambient factor (courtesy designer Aarti Aggarwal at Knock on Wood); or an apartment turned into a collaborative workspace promoting homely camaraderie and creativity (courtesy Gautam Desai Design); or the nuanced inflections of set design in interior styling of a luxury home in Shanghai (courtesy Qianxun Design), what has really caught our eye this week is the sensitive healthcare facility for overweight adolescents in the city of Maastricht in The Netherlands.

The facility is designed to appear more like an activity centre with nothing clinical about it, putting the young anxious minds at ease almost instantaneously. Said to have accomplished a 70% success rate, the meaningful design underlines (or should we say - read-between-the-lines) the adoption of a healthier lifestyle.

Enjoy the issue.

Editorial

Dear IAnDian,

We’re back after a much-needed break to a refreshing deluge of projects veering from hard-core architecture and technology to luxury lifestyles. We bring you a little of both this week. Marvelling at the varying degrees and meaning of luxury, we document for you three residential projects – a sprawling farmhouse by Atelier Design N Domain in Vadodara; a spacious 5-BHK by Cluster One Creative Solutions in Nagpur; and a Mumbai apartment by Kavan Shah Design Studio.

On the architecture front, we have Zaha Hadid Architects designing the first-ever free-form high-rise exoskeleton in Macau; Foster and Partners’ new landmark building for Madrid; an open-typology office design and the highlight as we call it (inhouse), the breakthrough in new materials by MVRDV, who have designed a beautiful façade for luxury brand Bulgari.

So, till we put our gear together for another fresh bouquet next week, sit back and enjoy the read and write in to us at editor@indiaartndesign.com

Dear IAnDian,

The urge to do something different consumes us all at some point or the other. So, we bring you that something different in three different scenarios of interiors (two from China) and not to leave fashion behind – you can read about designer Payal Khandwala’s reversible sarees!

The right kind of lighting can play a very significant role in the design and the mood that emanates from its confines. Check out GD Lighting Design’s take on an expansive office in a mixed-use building in Guangzhou, China. Subtlety at its best!

The other project from Guangzhou is an all-black interior envelope that literally creates a variety of moods in different shades of black. Understated and mesmerising; yet, perhaps, a trifle boring in the long run.

On the fashion front, the reversible saree could light up your mood – not to mention – your wardrobe; especially since you get two for the price of one! And, it’s different!

Editorial

Dear IAnDian,

There is something about the world of art and design. Look closely and it will show you a glimpse of vulnerability. It may not percolate to the details but, certainly at the macro level, you can sense that little sensitive inkling of perhaps… the desire to conform?! In our stories this week, all are interwoven with an underlying artistic element.

So, you will see Studio Osmosis transform a small space to appear large using simple materials and approach with a touch of whimsy. The same small space concept blends with the whimsical in the single room for two by Studio Ben Allen that ingenuously brings architectural installation and interior design on the same plane.

Whether it is refurbishing a heritage property – the traditional Baserri in Northern Spain, or a luxurious home that exploits the ingenuity of contemporary and traditional artists to create bespoke signature pieces, art is at the heart of design!

Enjoy the issue.

Dear IAnDian,

There is always an unidentified depth in design. Irrespective, whether it is a large building, an everyday product or just a small, seemingly insignificant detail of design. All it needs is the trained eye. This issue is abuzz with both - design and details.

From awe-inspiring - like the shadow play architectural installation by Lucion Media, to repurposed antique jewellery with fine silver and ornamental gold flourishes by the amazingly enterprising Lara Morakhia; from the enamoured-with-everyday-objects - designed by Paul Sandip - winner of three Red Dot honours and the brain behind a lot of our taken-for-granted useful objects, to the introduction of quirk as a specifier - as you will see in out Product Hub offerings; to the soul searching of the cover story - an all-white apartment from Spain by none other than Ar. Fran Silvestre... every story we bring you imparts a take-away.

So, beat the heat and get immersed in some cool stuff. And, yes please, continue writing to us. All your feedback is being published in conjunction with the respective features. And, your valuable suggestions are being deliberated upon by our teams.

Dear IAnDian,

Luxe has a new meaning. And this can be attributed to the fact that the consumer is very well informed and much more confident about his choices than perhaps, he ever was. With design and aesthetics being completely dictated by personal taste and style, personalisation is key, and the degree of comfort is relative.

Ar. Arun Sharma of Atrey & Associates takes on our cover this week as he showcases luxury in space, form, choice of products and furniture that appoint the home and in designing a home, where indoors and outdoors seamlessly integrate. Here is a truly a luxurious home!

You will see the definition of luxury changing as you visit our next project - the all-white interior by ShroffLeon that is simple and understated yet transforms the look and feel of homely.

Speaking of home and hearth, five designers do us proud on the international circuit by having exhibited at the Salone del mobile.

Let me leave you to discover it all for yourself!

Editorial

Dear IAnDian,

When Frank Lloyd Wright said that “the mother art is architecture”, he was referring to a profound integration of different disciplines that come together for the benefit of the whole. To understand this in its full profundity, is a feat in itself. Many a times, what meets the eye and what touches the soul are two very different things – emanating from the same premise. Think about it. In fact, apply it to context as we unveil the week’s fare for you: theme-based office cum showroom by Spaces Architects@ka has Delhi-based Ar. Kapil Agarwal thematically deconstruct the way the factory works to arrive at a beautifully defined store-cum-manufacturing space without compromising on the aesthetic.

And aesthetic can have its own agenda: the building that sings proves this. Design firm, DMOA demonstrates that soundscapes, when effected along a building façade can make an interesting design story with human perception and behaviour at its core.

Then there is the public art installation that uses yet another interface of communicating diverse parameters of societal evolution to a person. And the list goes on…

Cheers to an enjoyable read!

Editorial

Dear IAnDian,

When we look at design, the first thing that drives a connect is the sensitivity ingrained in the ethos of the space, the product, or sometimes in the little details that define the macro picture.
Purpose-driven design introduces us to a premeditated conceptual approach - a means to an end. You will find this quality dominating our cover story - an ephemeral workspace - where an intense treatment belies the sensitivity of a well-defined methodology. Ar. Samira Rathod weaves the charm of abstraction into a simple office interior, underlining its work culture as a statement for all (who wish) to see. I would suggest that you read between the lines as our correspondent, Beverly enunciates the hidden via the obvious.

And the issue is packed with more... a youthful restaurant in Russia; a review of the Mezza card game; you can view Sunday's live updates of the launch on our Facebook channel @indiaartndesign and read the review of the just launched new electric car, Strom 3 in Mumbai; the first-of-its-kind write-and-erase robot; a delicate approach to housing ceramic heirlooms for posterity - the ceramics museum and more...

Until next week...

Dear IAnDian,

There's a very cheerful ring to the new financial year. A new series of editorial planning, fresh approaches, even a new volume of our weekly issues. So, while we thank you immensely for all the trust that you repose in us, our team continues to work relentlessly on bringing you design experiences to remember. Stay tuned and look out for some very delectable goodies to pop out of our stables every now and again!

Our stories this week visit Studio PKA and the plush home that they've recently designed in South Mumbai. Another plush home in Hyderabad by Think Designz - palatial, in fact. And the common thread that runs here is the warmth of home and hearth that the architects have infused into these chic abodes. In contrast is the close-to-nature lakeside cottage with its quaint stilts and rich architectural vocabulary. A library for contemporary readers and a bit about adding a streak of sheen to your décor. All this and more!
