Dear Reader, There seems to be a lot of talk about designing post the pandemic - how spatial layouts will accommodate the 'new normal' where social distancing will perhaps be the tested path to a semblance of sanity in the wake of curtailing the Covid spread. However, changing behaviour patterns have already made a dent in the way people respond to the built form and to each other; especially noticeable among institutional and therapeutic spaces. One such story - the Delft University by UNStudio finds place in our pages this week. A must-read; the design explores how flexibility is ingrained in the core response of an individual and helps him navigate his journey with an open mindset. Our cover story too follows almost similar principles as it speaks of a complete overhaul of a two-bedroom apartment into a flexible home with an open plan incorporating all the luxuries of a contemporary youthful lifestyle. Dear Reader, Knowing when to stop is an art in addition to being a carefully honed skill. Our cover story this week speaks of this restraint as one observes the studied strokes of material play and spatial planning. The balance of public and private spaces as well as the treatment of neutral tones is laudable to say the least. Do check out this project - once again from a young design studio, this time from Surat. This week, we also introduce a new series - 'My go-to Therapist' where architects, designers and artists will share that "something" that helps them relax and rejuvenate, when they face a creative block. We have all heard of the writer's block. Dear Reader, Look around you and pause a while... so many careers, a deluge of creativity, and so many facets of design and the human connect are incessantly being explored. As a magazine bringing you projects - by the fraternity and for the fraternity, we are constantly revisiting typologies and mindsets alike. This week, we visit four different typologies- a new mall in Shanghai; a refurbished restaurant paying homage to its historic building in Amsterdam; a bungalow in Ludhiana; and a boutique in Mumbai. Each of the projects focusses on the qualitative aspects of space identity and aesthetic appeal. Each defines an exploration of material play and its evolving impact on the ambience and subsequently, the user. Each integrates the program and aesthetic vocabulary such that you cannot separate the built form from its human connect. Dear IAnDian, We humans have a consistent desire to experience out of box situations. Situations that the adventurer in each of us can resonate with. Driving a constant need for betterment of the existing, are the three projects we bring to you this week: the House for the curious mind - a refurbished cultural centre in Amsterdam that is contemporised with great respect for its historic references and influences alike. A sensitive, beautiful makeover. Dear IAnDian, When we started speaking of unprecedented times two-months-plus ago, little did we realise that we were going to face a series of calamities: from the pandemic to Indo-China strife, rampage in the US, Amphan in West Bengal, series of earthquakes in Delhi, migrant tragedies, gas tragedies, now Nisarga on India's west coast... a time that truly calls for resilience and resonance, world over. And the strength of prayers. But life moves on, and so do each of us with our agendas to make this world a better place. So, on another note, if you are paying close attention to our stories, you will notice that of late, we have been featuring a lot of young and budding architects and designers. Their approach and treatment showing a marked influence of sorts from various quarters; but, therein emerges a style that is waiting to break free and find its signature. This week too, we feature young architect Ayesha Puri besides other women designers - all having designed personalised homes. Seems like a woman brigade this week. Enjoy the read...
