CEPT Archives – nuancing Indian architectural history| Calaa – the language of art and design | A ski chalet in Canada |3D printed petal dress and more

Like anything and everything else, globalisation is a phenomenon that has induced its highs and lows in our lives. While on the one hand, world cultures, cuisine and lifestyle choices have influenced us for the positive; on the other, especially for the globetrotters, it has raised the bar on what is unique and evocative or even representational at the other end of the scale.

This has led to newer patterns of approach to design and the novelty ultimately invades mass sensibilities as a whole. We have seen these trends, fads, whatever you may call them influence our thinking, attitude, personalities and lifestyles; yet they remain entrenched deep in the cultural medley of present times, periodically reinvented, redefined...

Our stories this week bring you a variety of design possibilities – from either end of the scale – artisan-machine and east-west design sensibilities merging into a product line; 3D printable material to meet current fashion demands; a deep look at learning from history among others...

We hope you enjoy the issue! Do please continue to write in to us with your comments and suggestions.

Wearable Architecture – Concrete Cufflinks| Facade design | Jean de Lessard’s deconstructivist lines for a Canadian project| Vickram Bawa’s career advise on fashion photography and more

“How do you define versatility of space?” we asked. “Like beauty, it is in the eyes of the beholder!” we agreed. It is but the trained eye that picks out the hidden nuances of a space and knows how to realise its full potential. The scale, form, colour, pattern... the vibe! Spaces emote and as once a well-known architect said to me, “A space tells me how to chisel her; I can feel her dimensions, and explicitly comprehend her potential. I know, when I am with her, what I need to do to bring out the best in her.”

Bringing out the best for their clients, we have for you a bouquet that gathers a dynamic workplace of an event company from Canada; a landmark peoples’ project from Loch Lomond, UK; a well-articulated home in suburban Bengaluru and a facade design in Brussels... besides talking about wearable architecture and a career as a fashion photographer.

Our features aim to take you as much on a pleasurable journey of discovering new design as they help you peer inwards, seeking solutions and mulling over design issues.

Speaking of which, all those of you, who wish to utilize the ideal platform to test new ideas and concepts with an international audience, spring on to the bandwagon of India Design Pavillion happening at Fuorisalone, Milan to make the utmost of the opportunity by meeting design think-tanks, new buyers, influencers, manufacturers to produce your design, international press and much much more... Send in your interest to iandmdw16@indiaartndesign.com

Spectacular facade of Indian Heritage Centre, Singapore; Farmhouse tailor-made for 3 generations; European-esque fine-dine in Mumbai and more

There is a lot to look back to in our ancient systems, methodologies and philosophies; much of it based on rationale and scientific approach. It is another matter that we are not fully aware of the import of such practices and most often, remain ignorant or satisfied with half-baked knowledge. The Indian Heritage Centre, Singapore by Greg Shand Architects is a beautifully curated modern piece of architecture seeped in the Indian context. A recommended read and I’m sure a must-visit, when next in Singapore.

Another project that impacts this week is the farmhouse by PVDRS Architects. The interior-architecture-cum-landscape project is a delightful abode of multiplicity for a family comprising three generations - another must-read!

The human brain needs to feed on something new at periodic intervals and ShroffLeon architects have done their bidding with two theme-based restaurants in the burgeoning fine-dine scenario of Mumbai. Another such, the Zoku Loft – a unique concept in hotel design is soon to make its presence felt in Amsterdam, before it begins its hop across the world.

And don’t forget to stop by the all new world class technologically advanced production house of the Al Jazeera channel. It’s truly exhilarating!

Awaiting your feedback...

Somaya & Kalappa design Mumbai’s first Textile Gallery; EDA calls for reconstruction in Nepal; can an inward-designed home help combat rising temperatures and lack of greenery? And more

As the authorities that be continue to research on varied parameters of lifestyle and living, expanding our knowledge sphere, we, collectively, seek to better our living conditions. Designers play an important role here - not only as informed professionals but as conscientious path breakers too. Top of the list this week is a small but concerned thought for the earthquake-ridden Nepal and the ongoing efforts for rehabilitation and reconstruction. The EDA is a body that aims to work towards the reconstruction and rehabilitation of calamity-stricken areas around the world. A laudable effort that we are sure many fellow professionals would want to contribute to. Take a look at the feature for details.

Mumbai has now secured a selection of its heritage textile heirlooms in a dedicated gallery at the CSMVS. While we bring you the design aspects of the gallery, we urge you to visit the collection for an intriguing look-back at our cultural musings. Monochrome residential interiors; the classic touch of traditional architectural elements in a modern home; wellness tenets applied to office interiors; a clever juggling of space for an attic office... have distinctive design bytes on offer.

We leave you with a reflective thought for the less fortunate, while we (you and I) continue to build our aspirations and pursue our dreams.

Theatrics in Design; Climate-control & Architecture; Design & the Element of Surprise; House of Contrasts & more

Nature’s wheel spins its course and with every new designer on the horizon, come a fresh spurt of design ideas and as many, if not more takers, who seek something new, different... And that is perhaps the innate challenge of the subject of design. To explore a new perspective, seek a new paradigm and continuously reinvent the envelope of aesthetics that constantly strives to meet erratic aspirational ratios.

The state-of-the-art dentist clinic by Pedra Silva Architects; the terrace-top tunnel suite by designer Sumessh Menon; the babysitting mall facility by designer Emmanuelle Moureaux; even the plastic-foil set design by Numen/For Use... offer some striking examples of a fresh point of view. With new materials, techniques, technology constantly on the move, reinvention in design seems to be opening up new doors and the results are for us to rejoice in. All this and more...

Get inspired!
